American Institute of Physics | Sometimes, seeing clearly requires complete black. For astronomy and precision optics, coating devices in black paint can cut down on stray light, enhancing images and boosting performance. For the most advanced telescopes and optical systems, every little bit matters, so their manufacturers seek out the blackest blacks to coat them.
Nickel has two characteristics that occur during thermal evaporation that can complicate the deposition process.
1. Ni is very corrosive when molten and will eat through (alloy with) most materials
2. Ni is very aggressive and will migrate out of the evaporation area.
There are a few ways to manage these difficulties, resulting in successful and repeatable evaporation processes.
For small amounts of Ni evaporation, consider using tungsten baskets made from stranded tungsten wire. Baskets are inexpensive, easy to use and only require low power (20-30 amps).
Another good choice would be to use our alumina coated tungsten baskets. These operate at the same low power levels, control the behavior of the corrosive Ni, but have much longer lifetimes. For reliability and longevity, an alumina coated basket is for you.

A research team has developed a double-layer dry transfer printing technology that simultaneously transfers light-emitting and electron-transferring layers onto a substrate. This technology is expected to provide a more life-like view in augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), greatly enhancing the immersive experience.

Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are everywhere, and they are currently our most mature battery technology. Yet they are not ideal for many applications. The thin-film batteries are longer-lasting than conventional Li-ion batteries, more environmentally friendly to manufacture, and can be charged and discharged in just one minute.
